Summary of The Call of Cthulhu
George Gammel Angell died last winter and his great-nephew, Francis Wayland Thurston, is his only heir.
The man was a respected professor at Brown University, but Francis finds some strange, as well as surprising, secrets among his documents.
The papers begin to reveal disconcerting information, apparently, the professor was in the middle of an investigation about a sect or cult that worshiped Cthulhu.
This sect had perpetrated some horrible crimes, apparently human sacrifices in honor of that being, a mixture of sea animal, monster, and demon.
And it is that among the things of his uncle Francis he could also see a bas-relief carved with the figure of Cthulhu.
This kind of cosmic god had come to Earth millions of years ago along with its extraterrestrial followers, from the stars. However, at that time it was still fast asleep in a submerged city in the Pacific Ocean called R’lyeh.
Cthulhu, without a doubt, was a threat to humanity, and in the second part of the book, we witness how the worst nightmare comes true.
For the monster to wake up, all it takes is the correct alignment of the stars, which it did happen.
Francis, out of curiosity, comes across the story of a naval officer who had recently died. The wife of the deceased gives the young man some papers where the sailor recounted what had happened to him shortly before he died.
He had engaged in battle with a ship, which his crew managed to defeat. Among the objects found was a sculpture of Cthulhu.
They soon realized that this was some kind of sect worshiping that monster depicted in the sculpture.
The crew and the officer continued on their way, but then they saw an imposing monolith. They had unknowingly arrived at R’lyeh. They opened a hatch and from there Cthulhu came out with all its destructive power, only the officer survived.
