1) Crime and Punishment

Author: Fyodor Dostoevsky

Crime and Punishment is a novel first published in the literary magazine The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments in 1866.

It was later published in a single volume. It is the second of Dostoevsky’s complete novels after his return from ten years of exile in Siberia. “Crime and Punishment” is considered the first major novel of his “mature” writing period. Since its publication, it has been hailed as one of the supreme achievements in world literature.

The work centers on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished former student in St. Petersburg who formulates a plan to kill an unscrupulous moneylender for his money.

2) Oliver Twist

Author: Charles Dickens

With Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens began literature dedicated especially to adolescents.

Possessing a marked autobiographical component, this novel relates the adventures of a boy who must find his way in an inhospitable world, where both goodness and evil are everyday occurrences; but it also shows that if one has solid ethical principles, it is possible to reverse misfortune and achieve better living conditions.

A beautiful and sensitive story, whose characters reflect the social problems present at all times. Oliver Twist is considered one of the most important novels of the 19th century and a classic of English literature.

3) David Copperfield

Author: Charles Dickens

The book is the narration by David, from his birth to his death, and those who surrounded him, for better or worse.

The story is told almost entirely from the point of view of a first-person narrator, David Copperfield himself, and was Dickens’ first novel to do so.

Since its publication in installments between 1849 and 1850, David Copperfield, its author’s “favorite son,” has left nothing but a trail of admiration, joy, and gratitude.

It was Sigmund Freud’s favorite novel. Kafka imitated it in Amerika and Joyce parodied it in Ulysses. For Cesare Pavese, “in these unforgettable pages, each one of us (I can think of no higher praise) finds his own secret experience”.
