What is the story about?

While trying to catch a grasshopper in the yard of the cabin, Wen sees a stranger approaching in a friendly manner.

His name is Leonard, and along with three other strangers, named Sabrina, Adriane, and Redmond, they invade the family’s home to warn them that one of them must be sacrificed to prevent the apocalypse.

Tremblay’s recipe is based on using an everyday situation to build up fear early on: a sudden sacrifice. The angst never ceases anywhere in the book, while the violent depictions are simply overwhelming.

The author wants you to come to your own conclusions about what you would have done in such a situation.

It is precisely for this reason that it is very easy to get hooked on the story and not detach from it until the end. So are most of his writings, and this is the base of his appeal as a horror writer.

Film adaptation

The Cabin at the End of the World has an adaptation to the big screen, called Knock at the Cabin.

The film was written by M. Night Shyamalan and is scheduled for release in February 2023. The script was written by Shyamalan, in collaboration with Michael Sherman and Steve Desmond.

The author’s message

True to his style, Tremblay never tells us if the novel has something supernatural about it or if the terror simply comes from people.

The intruders claim that the sacrifice was entrusted to them by God and the cabin was announced in several visions. The images of a tsunami on television are the alleged proof of the approaching apocalypse.

Tremblay presents the villains as ordinary people, driven by passion and by the misinformation wave of our time.

It is a way of testing to what extent our outrageous beliefs are really harmful to society.

If you are looking for a horror book that does not include a murderous demon, a cursed town, or a group of friends being murdered by the town’s psychopath, you cannot miss reading The Cabin at the End of the World.

You just have to prepare yourself psychologically to lose your cool for a while.
