1) The Turn of The Screw

Author: Henry James

The Turn of The Screw was published in 1898 and is about a young governess in the care of two orphaned children in an old Victorian mansion; what at first seems like a pleasant task will lead to a nightmare situation.

The children live tormented by an immediate past in which the previous governess, Miss Jessel, and Peter Quint, the employer’s servant and valet (the children’s uncle), had a murky relationship. It could be assumed that certain abuses took place.

Living with the former governess and her subsequent death have left an indelible mark on them. Trying to help them, the protagonist of the story begins to hear voices, songs, and to see the image of the previous governess, who died in strange circumstances, and the servant too, in what, apparently, would be ghostly apparitions.

2) The Canterville Ghost

Author: Oscar Wilde

The house where The Canterville Ghost  inhabits was the former Canterville Chase, which has all the trappings of a traditional haunted house.

Depictions of the wood paneling, the black oak-paneled library, and the armor in the hallway characterize the setting.

Wilde mixes the macabre with comedy, juxtaposing traditional English ghost story devices such as creaking floorboards, sound chains and ancient prophecies.

The story begins when American minister Mr. Otis and his family move into Canterville Chase, despite Lord Canterville’s warnings that the house is haunted.

Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne

The House of the Seven Gables takes place in a peculiar house, built in the 17th century and located in the center of Salem, in a small town in New England.

Colonel Pyncheon, of Puritan training, decides to build this mansion on the site where Mathew Maule’s cabin used to be, who is said to have been a shady, dark man, since he was led to torment by accusations of sorcery.

The colonel, who presides over the sentencing trial, cannot hide some crooked pretensions with the intention of seizing the Maule land. While he is being executed, he says: “God will give him blood to drink.” This curse will affect the following generations.
