1) Emily Brontë

Emily Brontë

Emily Jane Brontë was a British writer.  Her most important work is the novel Wuthering Heights (1847), considered a classic of English literature.

This work was published under the male pseudonym Ellis Bell to circumvent the difficulties that women of the nineteenth century had in the recognition of their literary work.

The novel, initially considered wild and crude by critics, was eventually recognized as the most genuine, profound and contained expression of the English romantic soul and one of the most important works of the Victorian era.

Here we present an outstanding work by Emily Brontë:

Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights is considered a classic of English literature, it is the only novel by Emily Brontë, first published in 1846, under the pseudonym of Ellis Bell. The author was born in Thornton, United Kingdom, in 1818. Emily’s personality was rough, wild and violent.

Wuthering Heights, one of the most relevant English novels of the 19th century, tells the epic story of Catherine and Heathcliff. Set on the bleak and desolate Yorkshire moors, it constitutes a striking metaphysical vision of destiny, obsession, passion and revenge. This work completely broke with the canons of decorum that Victorian England required for all literary production.

2) Jane Austen

Jane Austen

Jane Austen was a British novelist who lived during the Georgian era. The irony she employed to endow her novels with comedy means that Jane Austen is considered among the classics of the English novel.

At the same time, her reception goes, even today, beyond academic interest, her works being read by a wider public.

The candor of Austen’s works, however, is merely apparent, although it can be interpreted in several ways. Academic circles have always regarded Austen as a conservative writer.

It is then that pride, class differences, hypocrisy, cunning, misunderstandings and prejudices lead the characters to pain and scandal, but also to knowledge, understanding and true love.

3) Gustave Flaubert

Gustave Flaubert

Gustave Flaubert was a French writer. Considered one of the greatest Western novelists, he is best known for his novel Madame Bovary, as well as for his scrupulous devotion to his art and style, best exemplified by his endless search for le mot juste (‘the exact word’).

He had a great tendency to loneliness and social withdrawal. He was also a neurotic obsessed with writing, a pretext for his depressions and his enthusiasms, when he commented on some of the happiest pages of the classics.

His anti-bourgeois hatred began in his childhood and became a kind of monomania, especially visible in his last work, the Bouvard and Pécuchet.

He despised the vulgarity, the mediocrity, the dullness, the materialism of the bourgeois, and moreover his habits, his lack of intelligence and his contempt for beauty.

Madame Bovary

Madame Bovary is a novel that was published in installments in La Revue de Paris from October 1, 1856 to December 15 of the same year; and in book form, in 1857.

Besides being one of the literary selections par excellence in the genre of the so-called late romanticism, Madame Bovary constitutes one of the points of reference for the realism movement.

This work was developed in those years in three parts; with an incredible literary acuity, Gustave Flaubert shows his point of view on the life of the high-ranking society in early 19th century France, by marrying the main character to someone who offers her nothing more than to exhibit her as if she were a trophy.

A Simple Heart

A simple heart is part of “Three Tales”, a book that Gustave Flaubert published in 1877, a year in which he had already written most of the works that -despite the limited success of some of them at the time of publication- would consolidate his reputation as a novelist: “Madame Bovary” (1857), “Salambó” (1862), “Sentimental Education” (1869) and “The Temptation of Saint Anthony” (1874).

However, the elaboration of these three stories (in reality miniature novels) demanded the same enormous effort as any of his books, which forced him to search for the precise word, to find images whose verisimilitude resisted any contrast with reality, to devise plots after exhaustive reading and consultation, and to submit each of his pages to the test of reading aloud so as not to miss any missonance, always in search of the perfect phrase.

Sentimental Education

Sentimental Education (L’Éducation sentimentale in French) is a novel of 1869. It was his last novel published during his lifetime, considered one of the most influential novels of the 19th century. It was praised by contemporaries such as George Sand, Émile Zola and Henry James.

The novel describes the life of a young boy named Frédéric Moreau who lives through the revolution of 1848 and the founding of the Second French Empire, and his love for an older woman, Madame Arnoux. Flaubert based much of his protagonist’s experiences (including romantic passion) on his own life.

Sentimental Education has been described by Georg Lukács as the “psychological novel of disillusionment”. In a historical setting, Gustave Flaubert sketches a hero with features that, unlike Don Quixote, has a soul that surpasses in breadth of goals the world in which he lives.

Anna Karenina

Anna Karenina was first published in 1877. It had begun to appear in folio form in the journal Russki Véstnik (The Russian Messenger) between January 1875 and April 1877, but its publication was never completed due to Tolstoy’s disagreement with his publisher over the ending of the novel. The novel is considered one of the crowning works of realism. For Tolstoy, Anna Karenina was his first real novel. The physical appearance of the title character seems to be inspired by Maria Hartung (1832-1919), the first-born daughter of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

Charlotte Brontë

Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist, sister of fellow writers Anne and Emily Brontë.

They admired John Martin’s fantastic painting and architecture. Three engravings of his works from the 1920s adorned the walls of Haworth’s chancel.
Charlotte was an ardent admirer of Walter Scott, of whom she said in 1834: “For what is fiction, read Walter Scott and him alone; all novels after his are worthless.” But neither should it be forgotten that she dedicated a novel to William M. Thackeray.

The Hunchback of Notre-Dame

Notre Dame de Paris, Hugo’s second novel, emphasizes the theme of ananke, a Greek word meaning fate or necessity. Ananke appears in the novel primarily as an inevitable transition; stylistically, the transition is from classicism to romanticism and, ultimately, from the human to the divine.

Notre-Dame Cathedral is the embodiment of what must be recognized as the permanence of the transition. Originally a Gallo-Roman temple to the classical deity Jupiter, it became a Christian basilica and later, in the 12th century, a Romanesque cathedral.

As its construction continued into the 13th century, the Gothic style overtook and succeeded the Romanesque configuration; and the cathedral, completed in 1345, stood as the architectural script of its own history. The novel treats this cathedral as a statement of ananke rather than of any of its many particular characters.

The story mainly concerns the young, mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion and obsession for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Considered Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, The Great Gatsby explores the themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval and excess, creating a portrait of the jazz age, art deco or Roaring Twenties that has been described as a warning about the American dream.

10) Nathaniel Hawthorne

Nathaniel Hawthorne

Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist and short story writer known for his numerous stories of gothic fiction and dark romance.

Hawthorne is best known for his short stories -which he called “tales”-, often of sinister content, to the taste of the time, and for his four full-length novels: The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Novel and The Marble Faun.

Author framed within the American Romanticism, like Edgar Allan Poe, much of his work is located in New England, and many of his stories, generally allegorical content, intensely recreate the puritanical atmosphere that permeated the society of those years.

The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter is a novel that took place in the 1850s, where the author of the novel tries to highlight the problems of legalism in a town in England that had no problem pointing out the faults of other people.

The central plot unfolds under the life of Hester Prynne, a woman who is accused of adultery, but not only that, she is forced to wear on her chest the letter “A”, a mark that marks her as an adulteress in the eyes of society.

The subject is a delicate one, but it is of special interest so that the reader can understand and delve into the thinking of people who give rise to hypocrisy in their lives, affecting others without seeing the evil in themselves. That is the real intention of the author, and his whole message is developed on that argumentative sphere.
